3 Incredible Performances from Fantom Sonic Closed Testnet

The Fantom Sonic mainnet is on the horizon, and we have already upgraded some of the Foundation’s archive nodes on the current mainnet to Sonic, achieving a 95% operational cost reduction.

As we prepare for this highly awaited launch, we want to take a moment to revisit the incredible performance we’ve seen from the Sonic closed testnet over the last few months.

Quick recap: the closed testnet aims to showcase the maximum theoretical limits of Sonic technology using simulated traffic on a network that is observable to the public.

2,000 TPS — Realistic traffic

At the time of the closed testnet’s launch on October 24, 2023, we had configured the Sonic closed testnet to process a mix of synthetic transactions that resemble realistic traffic, such as token transfers, token mints, and complex multi-step swaps.

By configuring the testnet to mimic transactions on the current Fantom Opera mainnet, we were able to determine authentic metrics that you can expect upon Sonic’s mainnet launch, such as transactions per second, time to finality, storage requirements, etc. The full breakdown of transactions processed is as follows:

With realistic traffic, we achieved ~2,000 TPS at ~1-second finality.

4,000 TPS — Token swaps

On November 27, 2023, we reconfigured the closed testnet to process only ERC-20 swaps, demonstrating what the next generation of DEXs can achieve with Sonic technology.

By configuring the testnet to process only one type of transaction, we could also showcase the testnet’s performance during periods when one type of transaction is more predominant than others.

With ERC-20 swap transactions, we achieved ~4,000 TPS at ~1.3-second finality.

10,000 TPS — Token transfers

On January 17, 2024, we reconfigured the closed testnet to process only ERC-20 transfers.

The performance of token transfers is crucial for next-generation wallets, payment providers, and other dApps that leverage the ability of ERC-20 tokens to represent any currency.

With ERC-20 transfer transactions, we achieved ~10,000 TPS at ~1.6-second finality.

In summary, the Sonic closed testnet has demonstrated these remarkable performances:

  • ~2,000 TPS at ~1-second finality — realistic traffic
  • ~4,000 TPS at ~1.3-second finality — token swaps
  • ~10,000 TPS at ~1.6-second finality — token transfers

With the mainnet launch just around the corner, we're on the brink of transforming these impressive testnet results into an innovative, next-generation network. The future is in sight, and it's undeniably fast. Stay tuned on X for more updates regarding Fantom Sonic.
